Racing Results 2008 Season April 08 Sunday 20.4.08: The first of the long distance series saw keen racing in the Bristol Channel. In fresh conditions, five yachts were placed on the day. Class 1 honours were taken by JayTee - Frank Toman, who took the Merkur Trophy in 7h - 13m from 'Working Yacht 1', at 33 minutes. The Class 2 trophy was won by Progress - Mick Aspel, sailing the shorter course in 6H 10m from Lasten - Paul Turner, at 7 minutes with Greensleeves - Pat Jenson, in third place at 6H 21m. Saturday 26.4.08: The annual Man-over-Board - which is a one class race, took place in summer like conditions. A suitable object is thrown overboard and recovered under sail during each leg of the race and before proceeding to the next mark. There were 5 marks in all. Winner was Tigger - Bryan Mitchell, 2nd Greensleeves - Pat Jenson, 3rd place Gunsmoke - Martin Gibbs. Sunday 27.4.08: Weston Bay Race 3. Due to light winds the OOD made the decision to shorten the course. However, as the race progressed and as the finish was in sight, the wind filled in, and as Class 2 boats went through the finish line the wind picked up to a Force 3. Results: Class 1: 1st Jehad - Charles Porter, 2nd Polar Bear - Richard Buckley. Class 2: 1st Tigger - Bryan Mitchell, 2nd Greensleeves - Pat Jenson, 3rd Gunsmoke - Martin Gibbs. Forthcoming race - Jubilee Cup: Friday 2.5.08 - start time 17.16, Saturday, 3.5.08 - start time18.07, Sunday, 4.5.08 - start time 18.54, Monday 5.5.08 - start time 19.38. The object of the Jubilee Cup is to promote weekend cruising. To qualify, the event is to be a minimum of two legs with an overnight stop at an away port or anchorage. This is a one class race. Weekend Racing Results - Sat/Sun 5th/6th May 08. Saturday 10.5.08: Annual Single Handed Race. Conditions were difficult with little or no wind which put competitors’ skills to the test to complete the course around the bay. Several boats retired. Results: Class 1: 1st Charles Porter/Jehad. Class 2: 1st Martin Gibbs/Gunsmoke, 2nd Pat Jenson/ Greensleeves. Sunday 11.5.08: Bay Race 4: Excellent weather but light winds. Results: Class 1: 1st Charles Porter/Jehad, 2nd Dave Johnson/Maximum, 3rd Spirit of Braganza. Class 2: 1st Bryan Mitchell/Tigger, 2nd Pat Jenson/Greensleeves, 3rd Paul Turner/Lasten. The race was followed by a Mexican lunch at the clubhouse which was an excellent finish to the morning’s sailing. A thank you to the social committee and all the ladies of the club who helped out. Scarweather Cancellation/ N Elbow and Ladies Race WBYC's recently programmed Scarweather race was postponed due to a strong north easterly wind forecast. Those strong winds persisted and yachts partaking in the "North Elbow" were battered by winds reaching gale force. Class 1 honours were taken by Charles Porter/Jehad and Class 2 by Martin Gibbs/Gunsmoke. Weston Bay Yacht Club's ladies show the men the way! It was the Annual Ladies Race when the ladies took the helm and ordered the men about for a change. Class 1 winner was Ali Gregory/Jehad and Class 2 winner was Ann Mitchell/Tigger with 2nd place being taken byAnn Turner, Lasten, and 3rd place by Mo Tyson/Mojos. WBYC Weekend Racing On Saturday the 'Old Salts' race took place which was a chance for the more mature sailors, over 50s, to show the youngsters how it's done. Mostly, however, it was a day's racing of who got the wettest in the very heavy showers. First place was 'Tigger' with Bryan Mitchell and John Roberts, second place was taken by 'Dash 11' and third was 'JTee'. Sunday saw another drenching in the Bay Race with high seas and winds reaching force 7. Winner 'Tigger' but only 23 seconds behind was 'Gunsmoke' and in third place 'Lasten'. Class 1 winner was 'Appaloosa', with 'Dash 11' in second place. Thanks to all WBYC boats who participated in the "Irish Sea" summer cruise. The four boats that took part made the decision after a beat to Swansea and unfavourable winds in the Irish Sea, to go south to the Scillies. Weston boats visited a number of the Islands including St Marys, St Agnes and Tresco. All the boats sailed on to Falmouth and Mylor. Other ports and anchorages visited were Fowey, Mevagissy, the Helford River, Newlyn, Crantock, Padstow, Clovely, Ilfracombe, Watermouth Cove and Cardiff. Breaksea Race, 17.8.08 took place in S/SW winds F4/5 with showers. At the start of the race the fleet got away from Progress but when the tide turned at Breaksea tower, Progress managed to gain on the other boats and on the long run back won by 10 minutes. Positions were: Progress1st, Gunsmoke 2nd, Moth 3rd, Greensleeves 4th and Lasten 5th. Bay Race 7, 24.8.08 in winds of F5/6,S veering SW. It was a close fought race between the leading boats with Greensleeves winning by just three seconds from Tigger. Positions were: Greensleeves 1st, Tigger 2nd, Gunsmoke 3rd, Lasten 4th, Mandala 5th. |
